For over half a century, Culturecom has been a cornerstone of Hong Kong comic culture, dedicated to the creation and publishing of original comic stories that have become an integral part of the city’s cultural identity.

From legendary martial arts epics such as Dragon Tiger Gate and Chinese Hero to beloved romantic comedies like Feel 100%, our works have entertained and inspired generations of readers. Today, our core business centres on the creation, development, and management of high-quality intellectual properties. We own and manage a library of over 200 original comic titles and more than 1,000 characters. In addition, we act as an official licensee and publisher of top-tier Japanese manga in Hong Kong, bringing carefully localized Chinese editions of internationally acclaimed titles to local audiences.

Since the late 1990s, Culturecom has strategically invested in technology to enhance our IP capabilities — from digital creation tools and content management systems to platforms that support modern distribution and audience engagement. This Art + Tech approach allows us to preserve the artistic spirit of classic Hong Kong comics while evolving our characters and stories for new generations and digital platforms.

Foundation & Growth

In 1986, Culturecom was listed on the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as one of the largest comic publishers in Hong Kong. With flagship titles such as Dragon Tiger Gate, Chinese Hero, and Buddha’s Palm, the company quickly became a cornerstone of local comic culture. During this period, Culturecom also became the first company in Hong Kong to secure official licensing rights for Japanese manga, successfully introducing Doraemon, Dragon Ball, and the works of Osamu Tezuka to local readers.

Cultural Phenomenon

In 1992, Feel 100% by Lau Wan-kit was published and instantly became a cultural phenomenon in Hong Kong. The coming of age series captured the sweetness, confusion, and joy of youth, love and friendship, resonating deeply with readers.

It was later adapted into multiple films and stage productions featuring top Hong Kong celebrities, cementing its status as a timeless classic.

Entering the Digital Age

In 1999, Mr. Chu Bong-Foo （朱邦復先生）, inventor of the Cangjie Chinese input method （倉頡輸入法）and a pioneer in Chinese computing, joined as Chairman. Under his leadership, Culturecom launched an ambitious IP + technology exploration phase, investing in e-readers, animation creations, and early experiments with AI-generated animations and IP-based interactive media.

During the same period, the Group continued to expand its classic IPs into mainstream multimedia adaptations. In 2006, Dragon Tiger Gate was adapted into a major blockbuster film starring Donnie Yen, Nicolas Tse, and Shawn Yue, which was released in over 10 countries worldwide. In 2009, Chinese Hero was launched as a 3D MMORPG in Taiwan by ChineseGamer International, grossing over US$56 million.

Digital Activation & IP Innovation

In 2012, Culturecom formed a joint venture with Asian superstar Jay Chou to establish Ucan.com, with the ambitious vision of creating immersive virtual worlds that integrated our IPs with music and interactive entertainment — an early exploration of what would later be known as the metaverse. During this period, the Group partnered with IBM, China Mobile, and TVB to create mobile apps that brought our characters into the rapidly growing world of social networks and mobile experiences, including pioneering blockchain experiments such as a Bitcoin-based Dragon Tiger Gate game.

While these bold initiatives reflected our forward-thinking approach to IP activation, the technological ecosystem at the time was immature for these initiatives. The Group eventually scaled back these tech ventures to focus on our core strengths. Nevertheless, the knowledge and capabilities gained have since strengthened our IP development and licensing strategy for today's digital landscape.

Activating IPs for the Modern Era

Today, Culturecom continues to expand the reach of its classic IPs through contemporary adaptations that align with modern audience habits and digital platforms. Recent highlights include the movie Buddha’s Palm streamed on Tencent Video, a new film adaptation of Chinese Hero on iQIYI, and a highly successful stage performance of Feel 100%. These projects demonstrate how our IPs remain relevant across generations — from the timeless martial spirit of Dragon Tiger Gate and Chinese Hero to the enduring coming-of-age and romance themes in Feel 100% that still resonate with audiences today.

Building on our long history of embracing new technologies, we see artificial intelligence and emerging tools as powerful enablers that can breathe fresh life into our rich library of IPs. By activating our legacy characters and stories in innovative ways, we honour their original spirit while creating new experiences that connect with audiences in today’s digital era.
